As you might have figured out from my review and from me yelling about it on Twitter, I LOVED Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. It’s queer, it will make you want to burn down the patriarchy and beauty standards, and it’s just so utterly creative and unique. The scene in the mausoleum (if you’ve read it, you know)…BLEW MY MIND.
But before I turn this into another review, let’s do this tag! It was created by Lelynn at Sometimes Leelynn Reads. I did use some of her graphics (the dividers and the header) so be impressed with her, not with me. I can barely use Canva lol.
Alright, let’s do this!

Sophia: Favorite Sapphic Book
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
MARION AND VAL!! OMG their love is so soft and beautiful but also shows the vengeance they’re ready to lay down on an evil monster. I love it. Sawkill Girls will forever be one of my favorite books of all time and definitely one of my favorite sapphic books. Zoey is my favorite character but that does not discount how much I love the other girls and how much their relationship punched me in the feels.

Erin: The Book that Hurt you the Most
Rules of the Road by Ciara Geraghty
THIS. BOOK. This is a book I shouldn’t have read as I said in my review. It messed me up for a good week and was filled with one of my major triggers: suicide. That’s not to say it isn’t a good book. It is. It’s just something I should have left alone on NetGalley or said no to reviewing once I realized it was going to be an emotional war zone for me.

Constance: Favorite Loyal Character
Aster from The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis
This is another one of those books that will be seared on my heart for all eternity and Aster is one of the main reasons for that. She is so loyal to everyone she escaped with even if they were less than nice to her in the past (looking at you, Violet). What she’s willing to do for her sister and her friends is extraordinary and I hope she gets complete and utter happiness in the end.

Amina: A Book That Made No Sense
Mary B by Katharine J. Chen
This is the book that shall not be named. I have talked about it before and purposely didn’t review it here because I didn’t think my thoughts would be useful to anyone else but me. The author certainly doesn’t need to know them and unless someone asks, I don’t offer my thoughts on it. The characterization of Mary was not for me and I hope to find a book about Mary Bennet that I love soon.

Luke: A Forgotten Series You Want to Read
A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole or Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

These are the first books in two different series that I’ve wanted to get to for way too long. The fact that I have physical copies of both of them makes it even worse that I haven’t read them yet, but my physical TBR is a bit big and…yeah, it’s a bookworm’s dilemma. I just really need to stop buying new books and get my ass in gear and read what I have. Maybe these will be two of my reads in August!

Lille: Favorite Magical Kingdom
Enchanted Forest from Once Upon a Time
Ok, this isn’t book related but all the kingdoms I read about sound awful even when the hero makes them better. Even after Sophia and Constance change Lille, it still doesn’t sound ideal. So I’m going with The Enchanted Forest from Once Upon a Time. Does it have its problem? Holy hell YES. But the adventure of it makes it seem worth it. While there’s still the chance of running into a shady fairy godmother, there’s also a chance I could catch Red Riding Hood changing into a wolf in the woods!

Manford: The Absolute WORST Character Ever
Sophia from The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
I just finished this the other day and OMG THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I WANTED CAMILLE TO STAB SOPHIA WAS INFINITE! She is a demon and just generally, a big ole asshole trash person. I need to get The Everlasting Rose ASAP so I can read about her demise (hopefully).

Cinderella: Favorite Retelling
Ok…yeah, I couldn’t choose just one. I’m kind of obsessed with retellings so here are some that I love. I assumed I wasn’t supposed to include Cinderella is Dead, but if I could, it would be on this list too. It’s one of my favorite retellings ever (as I talked about in my review).
But besides that, I love Pride by Ibi Zoboi (Pride and Prejudice retelling), Milady by Laura L. Sullivan (Three Musketeers retelling), Sherwood by Meagan Spooner (Robin Hood retelling), and So This is Love by Elizabeth Lim (another Cinderella retelling that’s completely different from Cinderella is Dead. I recommend reading both). All of these either keep the spirit of the original but make the story new with diverse characters or different twists and turns OR are complete recreations that I’d read instead of the original stories.
And as Leelynn did in her original post, let’s give Brandy as Cinderella some appreciation. I watched this when it was first on (I was 8) and LOVED IT SO MUCH. Whitney Houston as the fairy godmother?? Yes, Please!!
I loved this so much!!! Thank you so much for doing this tag ❤ ❤
