HOW TO FALL IN LOVE WITH A MAN YOU THOUGHT YOU HATED
BY ELIZABETH ADAMS
Publication Date: April 5, 2021
Paperback; 266 pages
Genre: Historical Romance/Austenesque
For Elizabeth Bennet, Charlotte is the friend who is—annoyingly—always right. Colonel Fitzwilliam is the mischievous brother she never had. And if their convictions that Mr. Darcy is in love with her are correct, he could be the lover she’s always wanted.
There’s only one problem—he tried to ruin her favorite sister’s life, and she made an absolute fool of herself in front of him.
Can lasting happiness come out of such a beginning? And can a man die from chasing a woman too quick to be caught? Darcy is about to find out.
Have you ever read a book that just makes you smile? Or a book you read when you need a completely stress-free moment? How to Fall in Love with a Man You Thought You Hated by Elizabeth Adams is that kind of book.
It all begins with Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam on a walk around the grounds of Rosings. They’re talking about whatever when Elizabeth happens to bring up Wickham. Well, Colonel Fitzwilliam cannot let that name go without informing her about what a complete shithole Wickham is,
This starts the ball rolling and leads to Elizabeth and Darcy discovering who the other really is and finding out that some of the things they believe about one another are completely wrong.
Elizabeth is mortified to learn about Wickham and cannot believe how foolish she was. Feeling awful about herself, she stays back at the parsonage while Mr. and Mrs. Collins go off to Rosings. What should happen next is Darcy should show up and make his awful proposal.
But that doesn’t happen. Darcy does show up but the proposal doesn’t happen and the two are given what they needed all along. TIME.
Darcy is given extra time to think over his feeling and talk to Colonel Fitzwilliam about his plans and Elizabeth is given time to figure out how she feels about him without Wickham manipulating her. She also has Charlotte to challenge her opinions.
This leads to both Darcy and Elizabeth deciding to try. Darcy trying to understand Elizabeth and how she might be feeling and Elizabeth trying at a courtship with him
I never thought about these two needing a courtship but HOLY SHIT, the courtship is exactly what they need. Or maybe it’s just what I need so I can see them be affectionate, steal kisses, and smile at each other??? IT’S SUCH A DELIGHT.
But their courtship is not without its problems. But guess what?? They talk!! They discuss!! They figure out where the problems are and where they went wrong. I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING.
Darcy learns that he needs to be a helluva lot more vocal when his family is being assholes to Elizabeth and Elizabeth learns that she might not be as good at reading people as she thinks.
Besides the main couple, I think Charlotte is my favorite character. She challenges Lizzy in a way we don’t see as much in the original book and DAMN, it is so needed. I love this characterization of Charlotte.
I also love the expediency in the book. When Darcy realizes he did something pretty mean to Bingley, he fixes it ASAP. Bingley calls him some very ungentlemanly names (totally warranted!), but the situation is fixed. Same goes for when he messes up with Elizabeth. The dude does not want to lose her so he’s gonna fix his shit as soon as he can and to the best of this ability.
I will definitely be reading this book again. I can see it easily becoming a comfort read for me. It’s such a wonderful variation on the original and if you’re an Austen fan, I can’t imagine you not loving this book as much as I did.
